Understanding Society: India and Beyond is the new NCF-SE 2023 Class 9 social science textbook from NCERT — a single integrated book that replaces the four old books (History, Geography, Civics and Economics) for the 2026-27 session. Part 1 (9 chapters, released April 2026) covers the Earth (its surface, atmosphere and climate), early humans and civilisation, democracy and elections, and the building blocks of economics. Part 2 (6 chapters, released September 2026) adds oceans and life on Earth, medieval resistance and resilience, governance, and two thoroughly modern topics — managing personal finances and 'From Ideas to Startups'.
The book deliberately mixes disciplines the way real life does: a chapter on the price puzzle sits beside elections, and Earth science beside governance. It is the most visibly NEP-2020 book of the new Class 9 set — connecting the classroom to jobs, money and the world outside.
