Hornbill is the Class 11 English Core reader from NCERT's NCF-2005 series, prescribed in its rationalized edition for the 2026-27 session. Its six prose pieces travel from Khushwant Singh's tender The Portrait of a Lady — a grandson remembering his grandmother — to Nick Middleton's Silk Road journey toward Mount Kailash, with Gordon Cook's storm-at-sea survival story, A.R. Williams's Tutankhamun investigation, Nani Palkhivala's warning about the ailing planet, and Jayant Narlikar's parallel-history Adventure in between.
Five poems run alongside the prose: Shirley Toulson's A Photograph on memory and loss, Ted Hughes's The Laburnum Top, Walt Whitman's The Voice of the Rain, Markus Natten's Childhood, and Elizabeth Jennings's Father to Son. The book closes with a writing-skills section — note-making, summarising, sub-titling, essays, letters and creative writing — the exact skills the board's writing section tests. Rationalization dropped two prose pieces (Landscape of the Soul, The Browning Version); everything listed here is the current syllabus.
